“Hey tnx so much 4 d visit! Sori dal2 ko, kept u too long here. Haha. Miss seeing you guys! Ingat sa pgdrive!”

Iris, my oldest active friend. Sure I’ve had a lot of friends in my childhood but as life would have it most of them never last or unseen circumstances force you to part ways. But not with this one. I knew Iris when we were classmates back in first year high school. She had a tomboyish charm and I think that’s the reason we clicked because I knew I could joke around with her without thinking that I would offend her “girl sensitivities”. I knew who her crush was and she knew mine. She was my confidant as I was hers. She witnessed my first heartbreak and I comforted her on hers. I always tell my friends that if they wanted to know some incriminating secret about my past she is the one that they should bribe for information. But I’m pretty confident that she would never rat me out. Or if ever she does she’ll make sure I have a share in her profits. Hahahaha.

To our group of friends she is the “nanay” she would make sure everyone is taken cared off and on my part ensure that I was properly fed. During my birthday a few years ago they held a surprise party for me and they gave me a cake. Well it was the first time I really felt that it was MY cake since she practically fed me half of it.

Years later she got married to her long-time boyfriend and I was one of the groomsmen. I didn’t know if she set it up because during the reception I was the one who got the garter during one of the games.

I received this message from her because she informed me that her dad was due for a major operation. I quickly responded by visiting her at the hospital. I spent the whole afternoon there, sharing and updating stories. She told me that she would be leaving for the United States and I updated her on my relationship status and career (or the utter lack of it).

During the time that she was still in the Philippines we seldom met due to conflicting schedules but we kept close contact during major events. I’m excited to see her again when she comes back since she will fulfill her promise to let me be the godfather of her first child. Congrats by the way and hurry back here with my pasalubong!
